Tummy Tuck in Cleveland, OH

Diet and exercise can do wonders for overall fitness but often fall short when it comes to loose skin, stretched muscles, or persistent fat in the abdominal area. A tummy tuck is a body contouring surgery designed to correct these issues by removing excess skin and tightening weakened abdominal muscles for a smoother, flatter contour. Dr. Daniel Medalie, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Cleveland with over 25 years of experience, performs tummy tuck procedures with precision and artistry to help patients restore tone and confidence in their midsection.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, reshapes the abdomen by eliminating excess skin, removing stubborn fat, and repairing separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti). Many women consider the procedure after pregnancy, while others seek it following weight loss or aging-related changes. Beyond the physical improvements, patients often experience better posture and a boost in self-confidence from their rejuvenated shape.

Benefits of Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck offers both cosmetic and functional benefits, including:

  • A firmer, flatter, and more sculpted abdomen
  • Removal of loose or hanging skin
  • Repair of stretched or weakened abdominal muscles
  • Smoother skin with fewer stretch marks (especially below the navel)
  • Improved clothing fit and body proportion

The Consultation at Cleveland Plastic Surgery

During a consultation, Dr. Medalie thoroughly evaluates each patient’s anatomy, goals, and medical history to ensure the procedure aligns with their needs. He reviews before-and-after photos, explains what the surgery can realistically achieve, and outlines the recovery process. This personalized meeting also provides an opportunity for patients to ask questions, discuss concerns, and learn about the different types of tummy tuck procedures available.

How Dr. Medalie Performs a Tummy Tuck

Dr. Medalie performs tummy tucks as outpatient procedures in an accredited surgical facility (Brainard Surgery Center). After anesthesia is administered, a low horizontal incision is made between the pubic area and belly button. Through this incision, the abdominal skin is lifted, and the underlying muscles are tightened to create a firmer foundation. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is gently redraped. The belly button is repositioned to appear natural and balanced.

Smaller cases may be treated with a mini tummy tuck, which targets the area below the belly button. For more extensive needs, an extended or circumferential tummy tuck may be recommended to address the flanks and lower back. Dr. Medalie often combines liposuction with tummy tuck surgery to refine contour and achieve a smoother, more proportionate result.

Abdominoplasty Recovery and Healing

Most patients return home the same day and are encouraged to walk shortly after surgery to promote circulation. Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the procedure and muscle repair. On average:

  • Light activity can resume after about 2 weeks
  • Most return to work within 2–3 weeks
  • Full exercise is allowed after 6–8 weeks

A compression garment is worn to minimize swelling and support healing tissues. Swelling gradually improves over several months, with final results typically visible within 3–6 months as the abdomen becomes flatter and more defined. Scars continue to fade and soften over time.

What Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?

The average cost of a tummy tuck with Dr. Medalie typically ranges from $10,000–$13,000, depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether liposuction or other treatments are included. Fees cover anesthesia, facility charges, and follow-up appointments. Combined procedures, such as a mommy makeover or breast enhancement, can reduce overall costs.

Is a Tummy Tuck Right for You?

You may be a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery if you:

  • Have loose, hanging skin on your abdomen
  • Experience abdominal muscle separation after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Maintain a stable weight and good overall health
  • Have realistic expectations about results and recovery

During consultation, Dr. Medalie will determine the safest and most effective approach to meet your aesthetic goals.

Yes-Abdominoplasty needs to be performed with the patient asleep.

Typical surgery time is around 2.5 to 3 hours.

I typically give my patients antibiotics on the day of surgery. Post operative infections are rare and are typically related to the dissolving sutures which can sometimes irritate the skin. Please be aware that smoking is the number one reason for post-operative infections and healing problems. I thus require my patients to STOP SMOKING at least 3 months prior to a tummy tuck procedure.

During the surgery, local anesthetic is injected into the tissue using a tumescent technique-this blocks the sensation and also constricts blood vessels. As a result, there is very little bleeding during the surgery. I have NEVER had a patient have a severe bleeding complication post-op, but it is not impossible and a return trip to the OR may be necessary. No one has ever needed a blood transfusion for this procedure.

After the abdominoplasty procedure a patient will spend about 1 hour in the post-op recovery room. Drain care and wound care will be reviewed with the nurses. At home, patients are encouraged to start moving right away and keep the blood circulating in their legs. The abdominoplasty dressing consists of foam and a binder and stays on without being removed for at least 5 days. The drains typically are removed after 1 week. Once the drains are out, tummy tuck patients feel much better and can start to shower and resume driving and other normal activities. No crunches or heavy lifting are allowed for up to 3 months to make sure that the rectus diastasis tightening stitches remain intact.

I recommend that patients refrain from exercise for at least 3 weeks after surgery. Even after 3 weeks, the incisions may be sensitive and patients need to use caution. Full activity including abdominal crunches can not resume until the patient is 3 months out from surgery.

Some of the deep sutures under the skin can take up to three months to completely dissolve. For this reason, some patients may report sensitivity issues such as itching for up to three months post-op. Abdominal wall sensation may always be a little numb.  Typically my patients have resumed full activity by 3 months. The final result including fading of the tummy tuck scars can take up to 1 year.

Yes – I frequently perform multiple procedures on tummy tuck patients. Almost 100% of the time, I perform liposuction of the abdomen, sides and love handles. Sometimes, I also perform breast procedures such as breast augmentation or breast lift. Many of my patients ask for vaginoplasty or labiplasty as an adjunct to the tummy tuck (please see the mommy makeover section).

A full abdominoplasty with liposuction of the flanks and abdomen costs around $11,500-$12,500 at Dr. Medalie’s outpatient surgery location. All procedures are less expensive when combined with other procedures such as vaginoplasty or breast augmentation.

I frequently perform abdominoplasty and body contouring surgery on patients who live out of town and are unable to easily to see me in consultation prior to the procedure. I have several requirements for these patients: I must see pictures of them prior to scheduling surgery. They need to contact my office and have my patient care manager email them a medical history form to be filled out and sent back. Typically the patient will come into town 1 day prior to the procedure, and I will see them the day of surgery. I will perform a phone consultation about 3 weeks prior to surgery. I will then perform the operation and see them back in my clinic in several days to check the surgical site and answer any questions. This means that the patient will spend around 4-7 days in the Cleveland area. Patients who live far away, but can drive to Cleveland (2-6 hrs.), can go home the next day and drive back to see me for their first post-operative appointment. I will then follow the progress of the patient via e-mailed pictures. My patient care manager has information about hotels in the area as well as financing.
